Canto’ E Libertad (Song of Freedom), commissioned and premiered at the 2023 ACDA National Conference, embodies hope and resilience. This composition in the Afro-Puerto Rican folk-style of bomba invites us to break free from hate and prejudice.
Bomba is a captivating and rhythmic musical genre deeply rooted in Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage. Originating over 400 years ago, it emerged from the colonial plantations where West African enslaved people and their descendants worked. Today, bomba remains one of the most popular forms of folk music on the island, serving as a powerful testament to its rich African legacy.
